To apply RISD and most of other art colleges, the following materials are required:
1. Transcripts covering academic work completed during secondary school and, where applicable, college.
2. Drawings: Three original drawing samples are required of all candidates. Each drawing must be done using pencil on
asheet of white paper measuring 16" x 20". Other drawing materials should not used.
The first drawing must represent a bicycle; the second, an interior or exterior enviornment; the subject for the third
drawing is up to the applicant (you may draw any subject or situation). You may approach these three drawing in any way you
wish. For example, your drawings may be realistic or abstract; you may choose to draw the object alone or place it in a situation;
you can draw the whole object or only a portion of it, etc. These drawings must be submitted in their original form, not as
reproductions.
3. Portfolio: Your portfolio should consist of twelve to twenty examples of any type of two or three-dimentional work
you have completed recently.
Your portfolio must be reproduced and may be submitted as 35mm slides, as amounted photographic prints no larger than
8" x 10" or as digital images files on a CD or DVD.
Slides should be arranged in a plastic slide-holder page. If you choose to send your portfolio as digital files, each
image should be submitted as a seperate file in .jpg format. Individual files should not exceed 3MB. Do not combine images
in a prepared presentation or slideshow of any type, i.e. PowerPoint. You should also include a printed thumbnail page of
the images.
Whichever format you select, include a work description sheet. Number the examples you are submitting and on your description
page list the corresponding number, medium, size, date of completion and title for each work.
It is very important that your name full name and address are clearly noted on your individual slides, prints or CD/DVD
and your description and thumbnail page.
Original works other than three required drawing may not be submitted. Portfolio materials will not be returned.
4. A statement of purpose explaining your educational goals and interests, and particularly your reasons for wishing
to pursure an education in the arts or design. Please be certain to note your full name and address on your statement.
5. Results from the SAT reasoning Test (SAT). Please be sure to specify RISD (CEEB Code No. 3726) as one of the recipients
of your score report. The examinations of the American College Testing Program (ACT) may be submitted in place of SAT (RISD
ACT Code No. 3812). RISD requires that SAT or ACT scores in cluding writing component.
6. Letter(s) of recommendation. These should be written by teachers or other professionals who have first-hand knowledge
of your art or academic work and can comment on your potential as student. Although not required, these are helpful in the
consideration of your application. One letter is suggested, although as many as three may be submitted.
RISD strongly suggests that your recommender use RISD form which is available to be downlaoded at
www.risd.edu/apply_fresh.cfm to print copies of this recommendation form. Recommender however may use their own stationery, but it is critical that they
mention your full name in their letter. Recommendations should be sent by the writer to our mailing address in time to meet
the deadline you have chosen to follow.
